Nags Head and everything south of and best season is Summer, of course. The water temps are amazing, usually around 80-84. The clarity is usually clear. Sand bars for days!!!! The waters are typically calm unless there is a disturbance/storm at sea. All beaches have the potential for rips but if you can read the waters and know the signs of a rip you'll be just fine. Observe the behavior of the ocean before entering. Watch for white water to be getting channeled back out, discoloration, and dont enter where the waves aren't breaking.Don't let your kids play near the shore breaks on heavier days, they can be swept away quickly putting them and the rescuers at risk. The temps further south on Hatteras Island stay warmer due to a stronger gulf stream and direction the beach faces. Places North of Oregon Inlet may experience slightly cooler temps due to the direction of the land and the presence of the Labrador current. The beaches are all beautiful, please take any and all items brought back with you to help keep the beaches clean!
